The Global Pain Scholar Program identifies and empowers emerging leaders in pain medicine worldwide. Scholars are selected from top GOPF performers based on academic achievement, research, presentations, and leadership in their home countries. Through the program, scholars receive travel support to visit the University of Minnesota Department of Anesthesiology, where they share their perspectives, learn about advances in pain medicine and anesthesiology, shadow clinicians in the clinic, operating room, and ICU, and build international professional networks.
The program reflects the University of Minnesota Department of Anesthesiology’s commitment to advancing pain medicine globally, particularly in regions where the specialty is still developing. Through mentorship, education, and collaboration, we aim to cultivate the next generation of pain medicine educators and leaders and expand access to high-quality pain care worldwide.

2025 Scholars
The Global Online Pain Fellowship is delighted to recognize Engy Yusri, MD, and Syed Ariful Islam, MD, FIPM, as our inaugural Global Scholars for 2025. Dr. Yusri is a lecturer in the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management at the Medical Research Institute, Alexandria University, Egypt. Dr. Islam is an anesthesiologist and pain physician with more than 11 years of clinical experience in anesthesiology, pain management, and perioperative care.
