Recognizing Global Pain Scholars

We’re thrilled to highlight Dr. Engi Hashem from Egypt, one of the inaugural recipients of the University of Minnesota Global Pain Scholar Program!

Dr. Hashem completed the Global Online Pain Fellowship with distinction, showing extraordinary commitment to advancing pain medicine in low-resource settings. As part of her scholarship, she attended the ASA Lifeline ANES25 Annual Meeting, where she was honored with a crest of recognition from Dr. Michael Wall, Chair of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota. She’ll also gain valuable hands-on experience by shadowing pain procedures at a local hospital.

Dr. Hashem’s enthusiasm and passion were truly inspiring—she came eager to learn, and she’ll return home with new knowledge and skills to help thousands in Egypt.

This achievement reflects the generosity and teamwork of many; the GOPF faculty, the ASA President for reducing registration fees, and Dr. Drum and Ann Maria Crafort for their unwavering support. We want to thank the ASA Global Health Committee for making such initiatives possible.

We also remember Dr. Ariful Islam from Bangladesh, another Global Pain Scholar who couldn’t attend this year—his presence was missed!

Together, we continue to build a world where quality pain care knows no borders.
